Several community leaders have asked KidsOhio.org to provide key facts about the South-Western City Schools. The district is proposing a 7.4-mill operating levy on the November 3rd ballot. Voters have rejected the past two levy requests.
KidsOhio.org is not endorsing or opposing this levy, but we are providing the same kind of comparative data we regularly provide about the Columbus City Schools. Many of us know little about the South-Western City Schools district, which is larger than Canton, Youngstown or Dayton schools.
Key facts:
- South-Western has the second largest student body in Franklin County with nearly 21,000 students.
- Its rate of economically disadvantaged students has risen from 35 percent to nearly 50 percent in the last five years. More than 12 percent of students need help mastering English, tied for the highest rate in Franklin County.
- Sixty-one percent of its schools are rated A or B on the state report card.
- The district has the third lowest expenditures per pupil among the 16 districts in Franklin County.
